NEW STREET APARTMENT BUILDING RISES FROM ASHES

 

Just a little more than a year after a fire completely destroyed his apartment building at 7 New Street in Danbury, owner John Farley poured the foundation on a new building on the same site that will provide fifteen apartments for workers in downtown Danbury. 

 

The market rate units are geared to attracting young professionals and singles to live and work downtown.  Using an innovative modular construction design, the units are expected to be ready for occupancy by August.  The new building will include six two-bedroom units, six one-bedroom units and three studio apartments.  Handicapped accessible units will be available. 

 

 “It’s great to see housing units we thought might be lost forever restored on this site,” commented Danbury Housing Partnership Chair Mark J. Nolan.   “While the units will not have affordability restrictions, they do help meet the need for workforce housing in Danbury essential to our economic vitality.  We need a range of housing choices, including middle-income market-rate rentals, to ensure that we have vibrant and healthy neighborhoods in our central City.”

 

While all of the original residents of the structure were permanently relocated to new apartments after the fire, Mr. Farley has expressed the hope that some may choose to consider the new units soon to be available.  When tenants do move into the units in August, it will mark the end of a remarkable transformation at this site from rubble to renovated residences in nineteen months.

 

Mr. Farley commented:  "I'm glad all parties worked together to help ensure the rebuilding of 7 New Street.  The recent revitalization efforts in downtown Danbury are already showing results.  There is a strong need for market rate housing in downtown Danbury.  These new units will meet some of that need and provide a safe, comfortable home that the new residents can be proud of."
