VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR DANBURY PROJECT HOMELESS CONNECT

The Danbury Project Homeless Connect Planning Workgroup is seeking volunteers to assist at the organization’s fourth annual event to be held on December 10, 2010 at the downtown campus of Western Connecticut State University.  The event will be take place from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm.

Danbury Project Homeless Connect is organized by the Greater Danbury Continuum of Care in collaboration with WestConn and the Danbury Housing Partnership.  The event brings together more than fifty area housing agencies and service providers along with community volunteers to provide an array of assistance to persons who are homeless or in danger of becoming homeless.  Danbury joins with communities throughout the country implementing Project Homeless Connect events as part of a nationwide effort to address homelessness coordinated by the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness.

Volunteers are needed to help with event setup and logistics; to assist clients access services provided at the event; to assist in client registration and documentation; to help with food service and gift distribution; and to help with translation services.  Persons with Spanish language skills are needed in order to serve Spanish-speaking clients attending the event.  Volunteers may request to be assigned to perform tasks to match their interests and skills.  Volunteers will be provided training to enable them to provide the services needed to best serve the needs of clients attending Project Homeless Connect.

At last year’s event more than two hundred persons received assistance that included medical screenings, housing assistance, fair housing counseling, credit counseling, legal assistance, food, clothing and a variety of social and supportive services.  In addition to volunteers, the Continuum would also welcome donation of services, clothing items and funds.  Additional support will enable the Continuum to expand the direct assistance provided at the event as well as to fund follow-up services for individuals identified through event screenings as needing additional assistance.
